Types of tablecloth: choose the ideal fabric for your table
The fabric of a tablecloth determines its feel, durability and ease of care. At Happyfriday, we offer 100% cotton tablecloths and polyester tablecloths, both soft to the touch and easy to care for in everyday use.
These fabrics allow excellent definition in digital printing and are a highly recommended choice for anyone looking for design, functionality and easy care.
100% cotton tablecloths
Cotton is the benchmark material for table linen. Its natural structure allows high-definition printing that reproduces every detail of the design with exceptional colour and line fidelity. The result is a tablecloth with the visual quality of a textile design piece and the practicality of a product made for everyday use.
Happyfriday cotton tablecloths are made from 100% cotton twill, a weave that gives the fabric greater durability and body than standard plain weave. They can be machine washed at a maximum of 40 degrees. They are an ideal choice for indoor dining, both for everyday use and special occasions.
Easy-care polyester tablecloths
For those who need extra practicality without giving up on design, we offer easy-care polyester tablecloths: stains are easy to remove and most can be wiped away with a damp cloth or removed in a normal wash. They do not have any stain-resistant treatment: it is the fabric itself that makes cleaning easier.
It is important to distinguish this from an oilcloth tablecloth, which is plastic-coated, waterproof and has a plastic appearance. A polyester tablecloth retains a textile feel and all the visual elegance of the printed design. It is a good choice for family tables with children and for everyday use in the kitchen.

Summer tablecloths according to the shape of your table
The shape of the tablecloth should match the shape of the table. Using a rectangular tablecloth on a round table, or vice versa, disrupts the visual balance and creates an unattractive drape. See our tablecloth size guide to calculate the exact size you need.
Rectangular and square tablecloths
These are the most common shapes for dining and kitchen tables. To calculate the size, add between 50 and 60 cm to the length and width of your table, giving a drop of around 25 to 30 cm on each side. For a 140x80 cm table, you need a tablecloth of at least 200x140 cm. If you want a more generous drop for special occasions, add up to 80-90 cm to each dimension.
Square tablecloths work on both square tables and round tables when placed diagonally, creating pointed corners. This is a decorative technique often used in rustic and Mediterranean-style settings.
Summer tablecloths for the terrace or garden
Summer is the season when the table moves outdoors: to the terrace, garden or balcony. Our tablecloths are designed for indoor use, but you can use them outdoors occasionally: remove them after the meal and avoid leaving them exposed to sunlight or moisture in order to preserve the colours. Size guide: how to choose the right tablecloth size
Choosing the right size is just as important as choosing the design. A tablecloth that is too small leaves the ends of the table exposed; one that is too large can drag and be uncomfortable for guests. The golden rule is a drop of 25-30 cm on each side for everyday use. For special occasions or celebrations, the drop can be increased to 40-50 cm. Every Happyfriday tablecloth begins in our design studio in Spain. Our team develops every print from scratch —from the first hand-drawn sketch to the digital adaptation for production— without using stock illustrations or licensing third-party designs. Everything you see on our tablecloths is original and exclusive.
High-definition digital printing allows us to reproduce every line with a level of colour fidelity that is difficult to achieve with screen printing or roller printing.
Care and maintenance of your tablecloths

- Machine wash at 30-40 degrees on a delicate or coloured wash programme. Do not exceed 40 degrees for digitally printed tablecloths in order to preserve the colours.
- If possible, wash inside out: this protects the printed surface from friction with the drum and helps maintain colour intensity for longer.
- Use a neutral liquid detergent. Avoid bleach, as it damages the fibres and may fade the print, and avoid using too much fabric softener, as it reduces the absorbency of cotton.
- Air dry flat or on a clothesline. Avoid tumble drying whenever possible: high heat can shrink the fibres and affect the colour.
- Iron at a medium temperature, between 120 and 150 degrees, on the reverse while the fabric is slightly damp for a smooth finish without shine.
- Store folded in a dry, dark place. Do not expose to direct sunlight during storage to prevent fading.
What is an easy-care tablecloth?
It is a polyester tablecloth from which stains are easy to remove: most can be wiped away with a damp cloth or removed in a normal wash. At Happyfriday, we do not apply any stain-resistant treatment; the ease of cleaning comes from the fabric itself.
What is the difference between a polyester tablecloth and an oilcloth tablecloth?
Oilcloth is a fabric coated with PVC or vinyl: it is waterproof, but has a plastic appearance, is stiff and is not usually machine washable. A polyester tablecloth is a textile fabric: it has a soft feel, can be machine washed as normal and retains all the visual elegance of a fabric tablecloth. At Happyfriday, we do not make oilcloth tablecloths: we choose fabrics with a textile look and feel.
What are the best materials for a summer tablecloth?
Cotton and polyester are both highly recommended options for a summer tablecloth. Cotton stands out for its freshness, softness and natural finish, while polyester offers easier care and greater practicality for everyday use.
How far should a tablecloth hang over the sides?
The standard recommendation for everyday use is a drop of between 25 and 30 cm on each side of the table. This covers the edge of the table, protects the sides and creates a balanced presentation without the tablecloth getting in the way of guests. For celebrations or more formal table settings, the drop can be increased to 40-50 cm. For a formal banquet-style presentation, the tablecloth can reach the floor.
How do you calculate the size of a tablecloth for a rectangular table?
Measure the length and width of your table and add between 40 and 70 cm to each dimension, depending on the type of drop you want to achieve. A drop of between 20 and 35 cm on each side is the most common for a balanced, contemporary finish.
For example, for a 140x80 cm table you can use a 140x250 cm tablecloth for a lighter, more contemporary drop, or a 150x250 cm tablecloth for a fuller, more elegant drop. For large or extendable tables, always calculate the tablecloth size using the table when fully extended.
How do you wash a printed cotton tablecloth?
Machine wash at 30-40 degrees on a delicate programme using a neutral liquid detergent. Always wash inside out to protect the printed surface. Do not use bleach or excessive fabric softener. Air dry flat and do not wring. If ironing is necessary, iron on the reverse at a medium temperature, between 120 and 150 degrees, while the fabric is slightly damp. Avoid tumble drying at high temperatures.

How should I care for cotton tablecloths that are washed frequently?
A well-cared-for cotton tablecloth retains its colour and feel for longer. The factors that have the greatest impact on its care are washing temperature, detergent and drying. For printed tablecloths, it is best not to exceed 40 degrees, to use a neutral detergent without bleach and to air dry rather than tumble dry. Cotton is a fibre that improves with use: the first few washes can slightly soften the cloth.
