Why choose a duvet cover? Advantages over a quilt
The duvet system has two pieces: the duvet cover (the fabric shell) and the duvet (the filling). This separation has a clear advantage: you can wash the cover at home easily, while the duvet needs washing far less often. It also lets you change the style of your bedroom in seconds, simply by changing the cover.
Compared with a quilt (whose shell and filling cannot be separated and which is harder to wash), the duvet system is more versatile and easier to wash. Just swap the duvet for a lighter one in summer or a warmer one in winter, and keep the same cover all year.
Size guide: which duvet cover size you need for your bed
The size of the cover must match your duvet. As a general rule, add 60 to 90 cm to the width of the mattress for the right side drop (30-45 cm on each side). See our full size guide for all sizes.

The fabric of the duvet cover directly determines how it feels, how breathable it is and how warm you sleep.
100% cotton percale: fresh and breathable
Percale is a plain-weave fabric with a density of 180 to 200 threads per cm². It feels crisper than sateen, but is fresher, more breathable and hard-wearing. It softens with washing and gets better with use. It is the ideal fabric for spring and summer and for hot sleepers. Some of our cotton covers are made in top-quality percale.

Cotton sateen: softness and sheen for the bedroom
Sateen has a different weave that puts more threads on the surface, giving it a silky feel and a slight characteristic sheen. With 300 or more threads per cm², it is softer and more enveloping than percale, though a little less breathable. Ideal for autumn and winter and for anyone after a more luxurious feel.
Linen, the most breathable natural fabric
Linen is the most breathable plant-based fabric there is. It regulates temperature naturally, absorbs moisture better than cotton and gets softer with every wash. It has a slightly rustic texture and a very on-trend natural look. It is the perfect choice for summer and for bedrooms with a crafted or Mediterranean feel.
Flannel: the winter fabric par excellence
Flannel is a brushed cotton with a slightly fleecy finish, very soft to the touch and great at holding body heat. Cold autumn and winter nights are its natural habitat.

Caring for your Happyfriday duvet cover
Follow these washing instructions so it keeps its colour and feel for longer. See our full guide on how to wash and care for your duvet cover for every fabric.
- Machine wash at 40 degrees maximum on a delicates or bedding cycle.
- Use a neutral liquid detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which damage cotton fibres.
- Air dry on a clothes horse, spread out flat so it keeps its shape. If you use a tumble dryer, low heat and a short cycle.
- Iron at medium-high heat while still slightly damp. Flannel does not need ironing.
- Store somewhere dry and well ventilated, without folding it too tightly. Do not use plastic bags.
What size duvet cover do I need for a 150 cm bed?
For a 150 cm bed you need a 240×220 cm duvet cover, which gives a side drop of about 45 cm on each side. If you prefer a more generous drop, you can also choose 260×220 cm. The size must always match your duvet.
What size duvet cover do I need for a 90 cm bed?
For a 90 cm bed the usual size is a 155×220 cm duvet cover (45 cm drop on each side). Some people prefer 180×220 cm for a more generous drop, especially on deep mattresses.
What is the difference between percale and sateen duvet covers?
Percale is a smooth, tightly woven fabric that feels fresher and more breathable, ideal for spring and summer. Sateen has more threads per cm², giving it a softer feel and a slight sheen, better suited to autumn and winter.
What does 200 thread count mean on a duvet cover?
Thread count is the number of threads per cm² of fabric. The higher the count, the finer and softer the fabric. A 200 thread count cover is high-quality percale; 300 threads or more is premium sateen. At Happyfriday we use 150 thread count for our main range and 200 thread count percale for the premium line.
Can I use the same duvet cover all year round?
Yes. The duvet cover stays the same all year; what changes is the duvet: lighter in spring and summer (120-250 g/m²) and thicker in autumn and winter (300-450 g/m²). It is one of the big advantages of the duvet system: one decorative textile, many warmth combinations.
How do I look after a cotton duvet cover?
With the right care (wash at 40° maximum, no bleach, air dry), the cover keeps its colour and feel for longer. High-quality percale even softens with washing and becomes more comfortable. The key is not to use water that is too hot or spin too hard.
What is the difference between a duvet cover and a quilt?
A duvet cover is a fabric shell with no filling of its own, designed to hold an interchangeable duvet. A quilt has the filling stitched directly into the shell, which makes it harder to wash and means you cannot change how warm it is. The duvet system is more versatile and easier to wash.
Which duvet cover is best for summer?
For summer we recommend 100% cotton percale duvet covers, the most breathable fabric in our collection.
Which fastening is better: buttons or zip?
Both work. Buttons do not snag the duvet in the wash. A zip is quicker and more secure, and stops the duvet slipping out during the night. Most of our duvet covers have button fastenings, a tried-and-tested solution that combines function and good looks.

How do I stop the duvet moving inside the cover?
Always choose a duvet that is exactly the right size for the cover (they must match exactly). When putting on the cover, use the ties in the inside corners (if it has them) to hold the duvet in place. Shake it every morning to spread the filling evenly and keep the bed looking perfect.
