Why choose a duvet cover? Advantages compared with a quilt
The duvet system consists of two pieces: the duvet cover (the outer textile layer) and the duvet filling (the inner layer). This separation offers a clear advantage: you can wash the cover easily at home, while the filling can last for years without frequent washing. It also lets you change the look of your bedroom in seconds simply by changing the cover.
Compared with a quilt, where the outer fabric and filling are joined together and are more difficult to wash, the duvet system is more versatile, more hygienic and more economical in the long term. Simply switch to a lighter duvet filling in summer or a warmer one in winter while keeping the same cover all year round.
Size guide: what duvet cover size do you need for your bed?
The duvet cover size should match the size of your duvet filling. As a general rule, add between 60 and 90 cm to the mattress width to achieve the right side drop (30–45 cm on each side). See our complete size guide for all bed sizes.

100% cotton percale: fresh, breathable and durable
Percale is a plain-weave fabric with a density of between 180 and 200 threads per cm². It feels crisper than sateen, but is fresher, more breathable and more durable. Cotton sateen: softness and sheen for the bedroom
Sateen uses a different weave that brings more threads to the surface, giving it a silky feel and a subtle characteristic sheen. With 300 or more threads per cm², it feels softer and more enveloping than percale, although it is slightly less breathable. Ideal for autumn and winter and for anyone looking for a more luxurious feel.
Linen, the most breathable natural fabric
Linen is the most breathable plant-based fabric. It naturally regulates temperature, absorbs moisture better than cotton and becomes softer with every wash. It has a slightly rustic texture and a natural look that is very on-trend. It is the perfect option for summer and for bedrooms with a handcrafted or Mediterranean aesthetic.
Flannel: the ultimate winter fabric
Flannel is brushed cotton with a slightly fluffy finish that feels very soft and retains body heat extremely well. Cold autumn and winter nights are where it really comes into its own.

Care and maintenance of your Happyfriday duvet cover
With the right care, your cotton duvet cover will last for many years and become softer with every wash. See our complete guide on how to wash and care for your duvet cover for all fabrics.
- Machine wash at a maximum of 40°C using a delicate or bedding programme.
- Use a neutral liquid detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, as they damage cotton fibres.
- Air dry on a clothes airer, laid out horizontally to help prevent distortion. If you use a tumble dryer, choose a low temperature and a short cycle.
- Iron at a medium-high temperature while the fabric is still slightly damp. Flannel does not require ironing.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated place without folding too tightly. Do not use plastic bags.
What duvet cover size do I need for a 150 cm bed?
For a 150 cm bed, you need a 240x220 cm duvet cover, which gives you around 45 cm of side drop on each side. If you prefer a more generous drop, you can also choose 260x220 cm. The size should always match your duvet filling.
What duvet cover size do I need for a 90 cm bed?
For a 90 cm bed, the usual size is a 155x220 cm duvet cover, giving around 45 cm of drop on each side. Some people prefer 180x220 cm for a more generous drop, especially with very deep mattresses.
What is the difference between percale and sateen duvet covers?
Percale is a smooth, tightly woven fabric that feels fresher and more breathable, making it ideal for spring and summer. Sateen has more threads per cm², giving it a softer feel and a subtle sheen, which makes it more suitable for autumn and winter.
What does 200 thread count mean in a duvet cover?
Thread count indicates the number of threads per cm² of fabric. The higher the count, the finer, softer and more durable the fabric. A 200 thread count duvet cover is high-quality percale; 300 thread count or higher corresponds to premium sateen. At Happyfriday, we use 150 thread count for our main range and 200 thread count percale for our premium line.
Can I use the same duvet cover all year round?
Yes. The duvet cover stays the same throughout the year; what changes is the duvet filling: lighter in spring and summer (120–250 g/m²) and thicker in autumn and winter (300–450 g/m²). This is one of the main advantages of the duvet system: one decorative textile with multiple warmth options.
How long does a cotton duvet cover last?
With proper care (washing at a maximum of 40°C, no bleach and air drying), a 100% cotton duvet cover can last between 5 and 10 years. High-quality percale can even become softer with washing and more comfortable over time. The key is to avoid excessively hot water and over-spinning.
What is the difference between a duvet cover and a quilt?
A duvet cover is an unfilled textile cover designed to hold an interchangeable duvet filling. A quilt has the filling sewn directly into the outer fabric, which makes it harder to wash and does not allow you to adjust the warmth level. The duvet system is more versatile and hygienic.
Which duvet cover is best for summer?
For summer, we recommend 100% cotton percale duvet covers, the most breathable fabric in our collection.
Which closure is better: buttons or a zip?
Both work well. Buttons are more durable and do not scratch the filling during washing. A zip is faster and more secure and helps stop the filling from coming out during the night. Most of our duvet covers have button closures, a tried-and-tested solution that combines functionality and aesthetics.
Are Happyfriday duvet covers certified?

How can I stop the filling from moving inside the duvet cover?
Always choose the correct filling size for the cover; the two must match exactly. When fitting the cover, use the internal corner ties, if included, to secure the filling. Shake the duvet each morning to redistribute the filling evenly and keep the bed looking perfectly shaped.
