Kids' zipped duvet covers: the bed they cannot kick off

A zipped duvet cover solves a problem every parent knows: the child kicks the covers off at three in the morning and someone has to get up to tuck them back in. It is a duvet cover and a fitted sheet joined by a zip all the way round, so the bed closes like a sleeping bag and your little one sleeps inside, warm all night, however much they move.

Ours are 100% cotton, 150 thread count, with digital prints, in 90 cm and 105 cm single bed sizes. They have a side gusset so the child can move freely and a hidden zip on the back to put the duvet in and take it out, so the same cover works in winter and in summer. Made in Spain and OEKO-TEX® Class I certified, the standard required for baby articles.

What a zipped duvet cover is and how it works

It is not a camping sleeping bag or a baby sleep sack. It is the whole bed turned into a closed system: the fitted sheet stays fixed on the mattress and the duvet cover joins it with a zip that runs all the way round. The child gets in and there is nothing left to fall on the floor.

01

The fitted sheet grips the mattress

Made with elastic and suitable for mattresses up to 30 cm deep, so it stays taut even on thick mattresses or divan beds.

02

The zip closes the bed

It runs all the way round and joins the duvet cover to the fitted sheet. It opens fully to make the bed and closes in one go at bedtime.

03

The gusset gives freedom of movement

A side pleat that adds room inside. The child turns over, pulls their knees up and moves as usual, but without slipping out.

04

The duvet goes in and out

A hidden zip on the back lets you put in or take out the duvet. With a duvet in winter, without in summer: the same cover, all year round.

Why choose a zipped duvet cover for a child's bed

No more getting up to tuck them in

It is the reason almost every parent ends up here. Between the ages of two and six, children move a lot in their sleep, and an ordinary duvet cover ends up on the floor almost every night. With the bed zipped shut, that stops: there is no way to kick the covers off, so the child does not wake up cold and nobody has to go into the room in the middle of the night.

The bed is made in ten seconds

And the child can make it themselves. No stretching the cover, no squaring it up with the mattress, no tucking in: zip it up and the bed is made. It is one of the few household jobs a four-year-old can do alone and do well, and at that age that means a lot.

All year round, with or without a duvet

In summer it is used empty: with nothing inside, it becomes a light cotton sheet, and because it is still zipped shut, the child does not kick it off on hot nights either. As soon as it turns cooler, slip the duvet in through the zip on the back and it becomes the winter bed. One cover for both seasons, so there is no need to buy two systems or store one while using the other.

The natural step from cot to bed

When a child moves from a cot to a big bed, they suddenly lose the feeling of being enclosed, and some find that hard. A zipped duvet cover gives back some of that sense of security without limiting movement: there is still a space of their own, closed in, but in a big kid's bed.

From a certain age children prefer an ordinary bed, and the next step is kids' duvet sets or a kids' quilt. But while they still kick the covers off, the zipped cover is what solves the problem.

Sizes: which zipped duvet cover fits the bed

Choose the size by the width of the mattress, and there is no margin here: the fitted sheet is snug, so it has to be the exact size of the bed. There are two.

Zipped duvet cover for a 90 cm single bed

90×200 cm. This is the standard single and by far the most popular size in children's rooms: if your child sleeps in a 90 cm bed, this is the one. Shop 90 cm zipped duvet covers.

Zipped duvet cover for a 105 cm bed

105×200 cm, for the wide single. It is the one to choose if your child sleeps in a 105 cm bed or if you sometimes share the bed. Shop 105 cm zipped duvet covers.

Suitable for standard beds, trundle beds and bunk beds

The cover fastens to the mattress, not the bed frame, so it works just as well on an ordinary bed, a trundle bed and either bed of a bunk bed. You only need to check the mattress size. Trundle beds and bunks are where it helps most: they are the hardest beds to make because of the height or the space above, and with the zipped cover you just zip it up.

Both sizes fit mattresses up to 30 cm deep thanks to the elastic in the fitted sheet. If your mattress is deeper, measure before you order: a fitted sheet that is not taut slips off at the corners and the system loses its point.

Important

The duvet is sold separately

The zipped cover is sold without a duvet, and that is deliberate: you choose how warm it is and can use it in summer with nothing inside. We have two options, the 300 g duvet and the all-seasons duvet, and the choice depends on your child's room.

It goes in and out through the hidden zip on the back, in a minute. Shop kids' duvets.

Which duvet to choose: 300 g or all-seasons

The cover always has a duvet inside during the colder months, and that duvet is bought separately. There are two, and the difference is not just how warm they are: it is how many seasons they cover.

300 g duvet

This is the winter weight and the one most heated children's rooms need. It is plenty warm on cold nights without feeling heavy, which matters with a child: a duvet that is too thick is hard for them to move and ends up making them too hot. If you are only buying one duvet and want it for winter, this is the one.

All-seasons duvet: 120 g + 250 g

Two duvets that fasten together and give three levels of warmth in one purchase. The 120 g on its own for in-between seasons and mild spring and autumn nights. The 250 g on its own for a normal winter. Both together, 370 g, for the coldest nights or if your child feels the cold. It is the option to choose if the room changes a lot in temperature between seasons or if you would rather not think about it again.

And in summer, no duvet

Both options share the same advantage: when the warm weather arrives, take the duvet out through the zip on the back and the cover stays as cotton on its own. Nothing to store, nothing to replace. Shop kids' duvets.

Prints: animals, stories, space and stripes

At this age the print is not a decorative detail, it is half the purchase: a child who recognises their bed gets into it in a different mood. The designs fall into four families, and all share the same cotton and the same make.

Animal zipped duvet covers

The most popular family and the one that works at any age. Dogs, pandas, koalas, dinosaurs. It is the safe bet when the child does not yet have a clear favourite theme. Shop animal zipped duvet covers.

Storybook zipped duvet covers

Scenes and illustrations that tell a story, the kind that get a bedtime conversation going. They suit the rooms of children who already ask for a story every night. Shop storybook zipped duvet covers.

Space zipped duvet covers

Stars, planets, rockets. On dark or neutral backgrounds, they are the ones that last best over the years: a three-year-old and a seven-year-old can sleep under the same sky without outgrowing it. Shop space zipped duvet covers.

Striped and gingham zipped duvet covers

Simple geometrics for rooms that already have plenty going on, or for parents who prefer a bed that does not shout. They also sit best with furniture and textiles that are already in place. Shop striped zipped duvet covers.

100% cotton, 150 thread count

A child's zipped duvet cover is in direct contact with their skin for eight or ten hours every night, and goes in the washing machine more than any other piece in the house. That shapes the choice of fabric more than anything else.

Why cotton and not a blend

100% cotton, 150 thread count. It breathes, which is what stops the child sweating inside, and it absorbs moisture instead of holding it on the surface. A synthetic fabric is just as warm but does not breathe, and in a closed space like this you notice the difference two hours into the night.

High-definition digital printing

The design is printed straight onto the fabric with ink, with no layers on top, which allows prints with many colours and fine detail.

OEKO-TEX® Class I certified

Every fabric, thread and print is tested for more than 1,000 harmful substances to the Class I standard, the one required for baby articles. It is the strictest level of the standard and the only one that makes sense for a children's product.

Design notes

From our creative studio in Cocentaina, Alicante

Prints designed to be seen lying down

Designing for a child's room has a rule you will not find in any manual: the person looking at the design is a metre tall and sees it lying down, very close up and sideways. That changes the scale, the level of detail and even where each motif goes.

The team works on every print with that point of view in mind: which part of the design sits at face height, what shows when the zip is open and which motif the child will trace with a finger before falling asleep. A well-designed children's print is not the one that looks best in the photo, it is the one that can be looked at for a thousand nights in a row.

How we work

Every print starts life in our studio in Cocentaina (Alicante) and is printed and made up in workshops in Spain. Digital printing works like a large-format printer: it applies the ink directly onto the fabric. That is why it allows prints with many colours, gradients and fine detail. All our textiles are certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Class I: AITEX, an independent laboratory, tests them for substances harmful to health.

How to wash and care for the zipped duvet cover

It goes in the washing machine at home like any other bedding, with one practical difference: take the duvet out first. You do it through the hidden zip on the back and it takes a minute.

Take the duvet out before washing

Through the hidden zip on the back. Washing it with the duvet inside is what flattens the fibre and leaves cold spots. The duvet is washed separately and far less often.

Machine wash at 40 °C, short spin

Close both zips before putting it in: open zips catch on the fabric and the drum. No bleach and no soaking.

Tumble dry on a short cycle

It can go in the dryer. Iron up to 150 °C if you like, although 150 thread count cotton smooths out quite well on its own when you make the bed. Do not dry clean.

Have two, if you can

At this age, things happen in the night. Having a second cover means you can change the bed at three in the morning instead of improvising with whatever is in the cupboard.

Frequently asked questions about kids' zipped duvet covers

What is a kids' zipped duvet cover?

It is a duvet cover joined to a fitted sheet with a zip all the way round. Once zipped, the bed becomes a sleeping bag the child cannot kick off. The fitted sheet grips the mattress with elastic and the cover opens fully to make the bed or to let the child get in and out.

What is the zip on the cover like?

There are two. One runs all the way round and joins the duvet cover to the fitted sheet: it is the one that closes the bed and stops the child kicking the covers off. The other is hidden on the back and is for putting the duvet in and taking it out. Both open fully, so making the bed or changing the duvet takes a single move.

From what age can a zipped duvet cover be used?

It works well from when the child moves from the cot to a bed, at around two, until they are seven or eight. From that age most prefer an ordinary bed and no longer kick the covers off as much, so the next step is a kids' duvet set.

Does the zipped cover include the duvet?

No, the duvet is sold separately. That is deliberate: you choose how warm it is and can use the cover empty in summer, like a light cotton sheet. You can choose between the 300 g duvet, which is the winter one, and the all-seasons duvet, which is two duvets of 120 g and 250 g that fasten together and give three levels of warmth.

How do you put the duvet in and take it out?

Through a hidden zip on the back of the cover. Open it, slide the duvet in, spreading it well into the corners, and close it. It takes a minute and it is the same process to take it out before washing or when the warm weather comes.

What size zipped duvet cover do I need?

There are two sizes: 90×200 cm for a 90 cm bed and 105×200 cm for a 105 cm bed. Choose by the width of the mattress and it has to match exactly, because the fitted sheet is snug. Both fit mattresses up to 30 cm deep.

Is it suitable for trundle beds and bunk beds?

Yes. The cover fits the mattress and does not depend on the bed frame, so it works just as well on a standard bed, a trundle bed and both beds of a bunk bed. You only need to choose the size by the mattress. On these beds it is especially practical, because they are the hardest to make and with the cover you just zip it up.

Is it suitable for deep mattresses or divan beds?

Yes, up to 30 cm deep. The fitted sheet has elastic that keeps it taut within that range. If your mattress is deeper than 30 cm, measure first: a fitted sheet that does not reach properly slips off at the corners and the cover loses its purpose.

Can the child move inside the cover?

Yes, and that is the difference compared with closing the bed any other way. The cover has a side gusset that adds room: the child turns over, pulls their knees up and changes position as normal. What they cannot do is kick the covers off.

Can it be used in summer?

Yes, with the duvet taken out. With nothing inside, the cover becomes a light cotton sheet that is still zipped shut, so the child does not kick it off on warm nights either. One product covering both seasons.

Can it go in the washing machine at home?

Yes. Take the duvet out first through the zip on the back and close both zips before putting it in. Wash at 40 °C maximum on a short spin, with no bleach and no soaking. It can be tumble dried on a short cycle and ironed up to 150 °C. Do not dry clean.

What are they made of?

100% cotton, 150 thread count, soft and breathable, with high-definition digital printing. They are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certified, the standard required for baby articles.

What is the difference between a zipped duvet cover and a duvet set?

A duvet set is separate pieces: duvet cover, fitted sheet and pillowcase, put on separately and easy for the child to kick off. A zipped duvet cover has the cover and fitted sheet joined by a zip, so the bed is closed. A duvet set is the right choice once the child sleeps without moving around so much.

Are Happyfriday zipped duvet covers made in Spain?

Yes. They are designed in our studio in Cocentaina (Alicante) and printed and made up in workshops in Spain. The prints are developed by our team of designers from the very first sketch.
