Throws and blankets for the sofa and bed, in cotton and made in Spain

A sofa throw is the smallest piece in the house and the one you use most. It sits on the arm of the sofa for afternoons with a book, at the foot of the bed for the nights when the quilt is not quite enough, and on the terrace when the evening turns chilly early. It does not warm a whole room: it warms one person, which is exactly what you need most of the year.

Happyfriday throws are knitted in 70% cotton with a fringed finish, in a 130×170 cm size. They come plain and checked, in a palette of soft tones designed to go with any sofa. Made up in Spain and OEKO-TEX® certified.

What a throw is for

One piece, four different lives. A 130×170 throw is big enough to wrap yourself in and small enough to take anywhere, and that is the whole point: it has no fixed place in the house.

Sofa throw

Relax and snuggle up while you watch your favourite film. It is the piece that makes the sofa the best seat in the house on winter afternoons, and the one that stays folded on the arm when you are not using it.

Main use

At the foot of the bed

The finishing touch that also works hard. Folded at the foot, it completes a made bed, and on nights when the quilt is not quite enough it is right there, no getting up to look for anything.

Travel

Heading off on a trip? It is light and folds small. Car, train, plane or a cottage in the country: it is the blanket you take with you when you do not know how warm your destination will be.

And also

The gift that always hits the mark

A throw does not depend on size, on taste in prints, or on whether the home is modern or classic. It fits in any living room, works all year round and gets used from day one. That is why it is one of the few things you can give without knowing someone's home well.

If in doubt, go for a plain throw in beige or grey: it suits the most living rooms, sight unseen.

Sofa throw: how to choose yours

It is the main use and the one that shapes the choice most. You do not choose a sofa throw for how warm it is, you choose it for how it looks when nobody is using it, because 90% of the time it will be folded on the arm or draped over the back.

The right size for a sofa

130×170 cm is the standard sofa throw proportion. It covers a seated person from feet to chest, drapes well over the arm without dragging on the floor and is not bulky when folded. Larger sizes are designed for beds, not sofas: in a living room they are too much and pile up.

Which colour goes with your sofa

With a grey or beige sofa any of them works, because the whole palette is built on neutrals. With a bold or patterned sofa, beige and off-white give the eye a rest. And with linen or rustic-weave sofas, the checked throw speaks the same language.

One or two

On a two-seater, one is enough. On a three-seater or a chaise longue, two matching or coordinating throws work better than one large one: everyone takes their own and the sofa is never half covered.

Types of throw: plain, checked and fringed

They all share the same size, fabric and finish. What changes is the knit pattern and the colour, and that is where you decide, because a throw is on show every day in the most visible spot in the living room.

Checked throw

The checks are worked into the knit itself, not printed, so they show as texture rather than a printed design. They are not bold Scottish tartan checks: they are soft checks, in the same neutral palette. It is the option with more presence of the two, the one you notice when it is folded on the arm of the sofa.

Plain throw

No pattern, with the texture of the knit as the only relief. It is the safest choice when the living room already has plenty going on — a patterned sofa, printed cushions, pictures on the wall — because it adds warmth without competing with anything.

Fringed finish

Both short ends are finished with fringes. It is a detail you see mostly when the throw is folded, which is how it spends most of its time, and it is what sets a throw apart from an ordinary blanket.

Colours

The palette moves in neutrals and muted tones: beige, grey, off-white, brown, green and pink. They are chosen to live alongside the sofas you already have, not to take over. If in doubt, beige and grey suit the most living rooms; green and pink add colour without raising the volume.

Knitted fabric with 70% cotton

A throw is handled more than any other piece in the house: picked up, folded, dragged to the sofa. The fabric has to stand up to that and still feel good to the touch.

Composition: 70% cotton, 25% polyester, 5% other fibres

The majority cotton is what brings softness and breathability: it keeps you warm without the stuffy heat of synthetic blankets, which is why it works just as well in October as in April. The polyester is there for a specific reason: it stabilises the knit so it does not lose its shape or stretch with use.

Fringed finish

Both short ends are finished with fringes. It is a finish you see mostly when the throw is folded on the arm of the sofa, which is how it spends most of its time, and it is what sets a throw apart from an ordinary blanket.

Light but enveloping

The knit traps air between its loops and that air is what insulates, so it is much warmer than its weight suggests. It is the difference between being covered and feeling weighed down: a knitted throw feels like a layer, not a weight.

Design notes

From our creative studio in Cocentaina, Alicante

A palette that does not compete

A throw is a small piece in a room where the decisions have already been made: the sofa is bought, the walls are painted and the curtains are up. That shapes the whole job. Here you do not design to stand out, you design to fit in.

That is why the whole collection moves in muted tones — beige, grey, dusty pink, sage green, brown — and works with texture rather than colour. The pattern is in the knit, not in a print: you see it up close and it disappears from a distance, which is exactly what a piece that is always on show needs.

How to wash and care for your throw

It goes in the washing machine at home, no fuss. The only things to respect are the temperature and the spin, which is what protects the knit and the fringes.

Machine wash at 40 °C, short spin

A long spin is what stretches the fringes and pulls the edges out of shape, so choose a short one. No bleach and no soaking.

Tumble dry on a short cycle

It can go in the dryer, but it is better to take it out slightly damp and finish drying it flat: that way the knit regains its shape. Iron gently up to 150 °C, although it is rarely needed. Do not dry clean.

Comb the fringes with your fingers

They come out of the machine tangled. Separate them by hand before they dry and they will hang as they did originally.

Frequently asked questions about throws and blankets

What is the difference between a throw and a blanket?

None when it comes to the sofa: a sofa blanket and a throw are the same piece, a single size of 130×170 cm, designed to keep one person warm and move around the house. The real difference is with a bed blanket, which is bigger and thicker, covers a whole bed and stays there.

What size throw do I need for the sofa?

130×170 cm, which is the standard sofa throw size and the only one we make. It covers a seated person from feet to chest and drapes well over the arm without dragging. Larger sizes are designed for beds: on a sofa they are too much and bulky when folded.

Do you have checked throws?

Yes. The collection includes checked throws, although not the Scottish tartan kind: they are soft checks, worked into the knit itself and in the same neutral palette as the rest. The idea is that the pattern shows up close and adds texture, not that it dominates the living room. If you were looking for a classic bold tartan, this is not the place; if you wanted a discreet checked throw for the sofa, it is.

What size are Happyfriday throws?

130×170 cm, a single size for the whole collection. It is the proportion that covers a person sitting or lying down without excess at the sides, and that folds over the arm of a sofa without looking bulky.

What are they made of?

Knitted fabric with 70% cotton, 25% polyester and 5% other fibres. The cotton brings softness and breathability; the polyester stabilises the knit so it does not lose its shape with use. Both short ends are finished with fringes.

Can they go in the washing machine?

Yes. Wash at 40 °C maximum on a short spin. No bleach and no soaking. They can be tumble dried on a short cycle and ironed up to 150 °C, although it is rarely needed. Do not dry clean.

Are they for the bed or only the sofa?

Both. On the bed they work as a fine-tuning layer at the foot: they add warmth on nights when the quilt is not quite enough and come off in the morning without unmaking the bed. What they do not do is cover a whole bed, because they are a single size.

What types of throw are there and in what colours?

There are plain and checked throws, all knitted and with a fringed finish. The palette moves in neutrals: beige, grey, off-white, brown, green and pink. They all share the same size, fabric and finish; what changes is the knit pattern and the colour.

Are they warm enough for winter?

As an extra layer, yes. A knitted throw is much warmer than its weight suggests, because the air trapped between the loops is what insulates. But it does not replace a quilt or a duvet: it is the layer you add on top when you need a little more, not the one that warms the bed.

Can they be used on the terrace or outdoors?

Yes, and it is one of their most welcome uses: they stretch evenings outdoors by a few weeks in autumn and bring them forward in spring. Being cotton, it is best to keep them indoors and not leave them out in the weather or in the sun for days, which is what fades the colour.

Are they suitable for children?

Yes. They carry STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® Class I certification: they are tested for substances harmful to health. If you are looking for sizes and prints designed for children's rooms, they are in our kids' throws and blankets collection.

Do the fringes get damaged in the wash?

No, as long as you wash on a short spin. What damages them is a long spin, which stretches and tangles them. When you take the throw out of the machine, separate them with your fingers before they dry and they will hang as they did originally.

Are Happyfriday throws made in Spain?

Yes. They are designed in our studio in Cocentaina (Alicante) and made up in workshops in Spain. They carry the OEKO-TEX® label.

Which one should I choose as a gift?

A plain throw in beige or grey. It suits the most living rooms, precisely because it does not impose anything: the pattern is in the texture of the knit, not in the colour. The checked ones have more presence, so they call for knowing a little about the recipient's home.
