Quilt
Warm, reversible winter quilts made in Spain
A quilt does two jobs at once: it keeps you warm and it dresses the bed. It is the piece that changes a bedroom most in winter and the one that needs least effort, because you simply lay it over the sheets. Happyfriday quilts have 300 g/m² of siliconised hollow-fibre filling with a feather-soft feel and a petal-touch microfibre outer, soft against the skin and easy to wash at home.
And they are all reversible: printed quilts carry the design on one side and a matching plain colour on the other, and plain quilts have a different colour on each side. In practice, two quilts in one. Every print is created in our studio in Cocentaina, Alicante, in the heart of the Spanish textile industry, and made in Spain. If you are not sure yet which quilt you need, this page has everything you need to decide: the size guide, the weight chart and the real difference between a quilt, a duvet and a bedspread.

Quilt, duvet or bedspread: which is which
They are three different things and they get mixed up all the time, partly because the words are used loosely. Once that is clear, choosing is easy.
Quilt
A single piece, stitched on all four sides, with the filling fixed inside. It has a finished outer because it is meant to be seen, and it goes straight over the sheets, with no cover. At Happyfriday, it is also reversible.
This is what you will find on this page
Duvet
A plain inner that always goes inside a duvet cover. Change the cover and you change the bedroom without touching the duvet.
Bedspread
A thin quilted layer, 100 g/m². Light on warmth, big on style. It is the spring and summer layer, or the throw-over you take off at night in winter.
| Quilt | Duvet | Bedspread | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs a cover | No | Yes, always | No |
| Filling | 300 g/m² fixed, feather-soft feel | 250 / 450 g or all-seasons | ≈100 g/m² |
| Outer | Reversible microfibre, printed or plain | Plain microfibre | Printed cotton |
| Season | Autumn and winter | All year, changing the tog | Spring and summer |
| Changing the look | Turning it over | Changing the cover | Buying another bedspread |
If what you want is the flexibility to change the print every season, the answer is a duvet plus a cover: take a look at our duvets and duvet covers. If you want one piece that keeps you warm and dresses the bed with no extra steps, a quilt is the answer.
Size guide: which quilt fits your bed
Choose the size by the width of your mattress, not the bed frame. The rule is to add 30 to 45 cm on each side so the quilt drops over the edges and covers the base. Too short and it rides up and lets the cold in; too long and it drags on the floor.
Happyfriday quilts come in three sizes, and each one covers several mattress widths:
| Mattress width | Happyfriday quilt | Drop per side | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 cm mattress | 180 × 260 cm | 50 cm | Generous drop. Common on trundle beds and low bunks. |
| 90 cm mattress | 180 × 260 cm | 45 cm | The most common single. |
| 105 cm mattress | 180 × 260 cm | 37 cm | Wide single. A tighter drop: if your base is tall, consider the 240×260. |
| 135 cm mattress | 240 × 260 cm | 52 cm | Small double. Generous drop on both sides. |
| 140 cm mattress | 240 × 260 cm | 50 cm | European double. Same size as the 135. |
| 150 cm mattress | 240 × 260 cm | 45 cm | King size. The best-selling double. |
| 160 cm mattress | 270 × 260 cm | 55 cm | Wide king. |
| 180 cm mattress | 270 × 260 cm | 45 cm | Super king. The largest size in the collection. |
Single quilt: the 180×260 size
This is the reference single size and it also fits 80 and 105 cm mattresses. At 180 cm wide on a 90 cm mattress it leaves 45 cm on each side, enough to cover the base and stop the quilt riding up as you move in the night. In children's rooms it is the size to look at first, because the 260 cm length leaves room to tuck in at the foot. Shop single quilts.
Double and king size quilt: the 240×260 size
One size covers the three most common double widths. On a 150 cm king mattress, 240 cm gives a 45 cm drop on each side: the proportion that makes a bed look properly made. On a 135 cm double the drop grows to 52 cm, more generous, which works well on divan and ottoman beds. Shop king size quilts · double quilts.
Super king quilt: the 270×260 size
The super king. On a 180 cm mattress it is essential: any smaller size leaves the sides exposed and, when you share the bed, it is the usual cause of the night-time quilt tug-of-war. 270 cm guarantees 45 cm on each side even on the widest mattress. Shop super king quilts.
Filling weight: why 300 g/m² is the winter standard
Filling weight measures the grams of filling per square metre and it is what decides how warm a quilt is. More weight, more warmth and more weight on top of you; less weight, cooler and lighter. No number is better than another: there is a number that suits your bedroom.
Happyfriday quilts are 300 g/m². It is the sweet spot for winter in any heated bedroom: properly warm without feeling heavy or stuffy.
| Weight | Warmth | Bedroom temperature | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g/m² | Very light | Above 22 °C | Bedspread territory, not quilt. Summer. |
| 150–200 g/m² | Light | 18–22 °C | In-between seasons. Hot sleepers. |
| 250 g/m² | Moderate | 16–20 °C | Spring and autumn. Very well-heated bedrooms. |
| 300 g/m² | Warm | 12–17 °C | The Happyfriday quilt. The winter standard. |
| 350–400 g/m² | Very warm | 8–12 °C | Unheated bedrooms. |
| 450 g/m² | Maximum | Below 8 °C | For those who feel the cold most, maximum comfort. See our 450 g duvets. |
Torn between two weights?
Think about the real temperature of your bedroom at night, not outside. If you live somewhere mild, have heating or tend to sleep hot, go one level down. If the bedroom is cold, faces north or has no heating, go one up.
And if you are a little cold on the odd night, the answer is not a new quilt: it is a throw at the foot of the bed. It adds warmth where you need it and comes off in two seconds.
Reversible quilt: two sides, two bedrooms
Every quilt in this collection is reversible. It is not an extra on a few models: it is how they are made. And there are two families, depending on what each side carries.
Printed quilt: print on one side, plain on the other
The front carries the exclusive digital print and the back a matching plain, in the main colour of the design. It is for anyone who wants a bed with character, but not all the time: the print when you feel like it, the plain when the room needs calm or when guests are staying and you want something quieter.
Plain reversible quilt: two colours, one on each side
No pattern on either side, but each in a different colour. It gives you the same flexibility as a print in a calmer register, and it is what you want if the bedroom already has plenty going on — a patterned headboard, wallpaper, printed curtains — or if your home leans minimalist.
Why reversible changes the maths
Turn it over and the bedroom changes in seconds, without buying anything or taking up more room in the cupboard. Two looks for the price and space of one. It also extends the life of a quilt: when you tire of one side, the other is waiting.
Which side to leave on top
The quilt is the biggest surface in the room, so it sets the tone for the whole space. If the headboard, curtains or wallpaper already have a pattern, leave the plain side up. If the bedroom is neutral, the print is what brings it to life. We print every design ourselves and it is not in any other catalogue.
Kids' quilt
Same format in the 180×260 cm size, with prints designed for children's rooms. What changes is how you choose: what matters is that it stands up to frequent washing and that children can straighten it themselves. The plain side helps when the room is already busy, and the two-colour plain reversible works well in shared rooms. Shop kids' quilts.
Microfibre outside, feather-soft inside
The materials decide three things: how the quilt feels to the touch, how warm it is for its weight and how many times you can wash it without spoiling it. In our quilts everything is synthetic, and that is a choice, not a cut corner.
Outer: petal-touch microfibre
100% polyester microfibre. The yarn is much finer than conventional cotton, and that fineness is what gives the petal-touch feel: soft and smooth against the skin, without the stiffness of a new fabric. It is also an excellent base for digital printing, with great colour fidelity. And in everyday use it does not crease.
Filling: siliconised hollow fibre, feather-soft feel
300 g/m² of 100% polyester siliconised hollow fibre. Hollow because each filament holds air inside, which is what insulates; siliconised so the fibres slide past each other and the filling springs back instead of going flat. The result is a feather-soft feel: fluffy and enveloping, with the warmth of a down quilt but without its weight or its price.
Washable at home
The most practical part: it goes in your washing machine at home. A down quilt has to go to the dry cleaner; this one washes at 30 degrees and is back on the bed the next day.
How to layer a winter bed
The quilt does not work alone. How warm a bed feels depends on the layers together, and putting them in the right order keeps you warmer than going up a weight.
Layer 1
Fitted sheet and protector
Insulation underneath matters as much as on top. A cold mattress takes warmth away from everything else.
Layer 2
Flat sheet
Optional but useful: it separates your body from the quilt, holds warm air and means you wash the quilt less often.
Layer 3
The quilt
Printed side up, spread from headboard to foot, with the same drop on both sides of the bed.
Layer 4
Throw at the foot
The fine-tuning layer. It adds warmth on the coldest nights and comes off without unmaking the bed.
Design notes
From our creative studio in Cocentaina, Alicante
Exclusive digital printEvery print on our quilts starts life in the studio, with care and with time, before it ever exists digitally. For the winter collection we work with deeper palettes than in summer — midnight blues, pine greens, terracottas — because a quilt covers the largest surface in the bedroom and in the colder months it is the first thing you see as you walk in.
The team chooses each motif by thinking about how the design will behave on a made bed: how the print falls over the sides, which part shows with the pillow in place and how it looks from the doorway.

Every print starts life in our studio in Cocentaina (Alicante) and is printed and made up in workshops in Spain. Digital printing works like a large-format printer: it applies the ink directly onto the fabric. That is why it allows prints with many colours, gradients and fine detail. All our textiles are certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Class I: AITEX, an independent laboratory, tests them for substances harmful to health.

How to wash and care for your quilt
Microfibre is resistant to washing. What shortens its life is not use or washing: it is drying. High heat flattens hollow fibre for good, and a flattened filling no longer keeps you evenly warm.
Air it for five minutes every morning
Pull back the bed and leave the quilt unstraightened while you get dressed. It is the most effective care and the least practised: it lets the night's moisture evaporate before it settles in the filling.
Shake it once a week
Hold it by the short side and give it two or three shakes. It redistributes the fibre and stops it bunching in some areas and leaving others cold.
Wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle
Neutral liquid detergent, no bleach, not too much fabric softener, gentle spin. For the 240×260 and 270×260 sizes you need a machine of 8 kg or more: packed too tight, it will not rinse properly. And do not iron it: microfibre does not need it.
Dry flat and out of direct sun
Hanging it on a line makes the wet filling slide down under its own weight. In a tumble dryer, low heat and dryer balls to restore the loft. Never on a radiator.
Check it is dry inside
The surface dries before the filling. Feel the inside before you store it or put it back on the bed: trapped moisture is what causes odours.
Frequently asked questions about quilts
What is the difference between a quilt and a duvet cover?
A quilt is stitched on all four sides with the filling already inside: one piece, ready to use over the sheets. A duvet cover is an open cover that holds an interchangeable duvet inside. A quilt is more practical and dresses the bed on its own; a duvet and cover let you change the warmth with the seasons.
What size quilt do I need for my bed?
Happyfriday quilts come in three sizes. 180×260 cm for single beds (80, 90 and 105 cm mattresses). 240×260 cm for double and king size beds (135, 140 and 150 cm). 270×260 cm for super king beds (160 and 180 cm). The rule is to add 30 to 45 cm per side to the mattress width for a drop that covers the base.
Is 300 g/m² warm enough for winter?
Yes, for most bedrooms. 300 g/m² is the winter standard in any heated room. If you feel the cold a lot or your bedroom has no heating, add a layer: a throw at the foot of the bed or a 450 g duvet inside a cover.
What is the difference between a quilt and a bedspread?
The thickness of the filling and what it is for. A bedspread has a thin quilted layer of around 100 g/m² and is mainly decorative, for spring and summer. A quilt has 300 g/m² and its main job is to keep you warm in the colder months, although it also dresses the bed. They complement each other: a bedspread in summer, a quilt in winter.
Can I wash the quilt at home, in the washing machine?
Yes, it is designed for it. Delicate cycle at 30 degrees, neutral liquid detergent, no bleach, not too much softener, gentle spin. You need a machine of 8 kg or more for the 240×260 and 270×260 cm sizes. Dry flat and out of direct sun, or tumble dry on low with dryer balls. Do not iron: microfibre does not need it and direct heat damages it.
Is a quilt the same as a duvet?
No, and it is the most common mix-up. A duvet is a plain filled inner that always goes inside a duvet cover. A quilt is a closed piece with a finished outer, used straight over the sheets with no cover. The ones on this page are quilts; if you were looking for the other, you will find it in duvets.
Are Happyfriday quilts reversible?
All of them, and there are two families. Printed quilts have the exclusive digital print on one side and a matching plain on the other. Plain quilts have a different colour on each side. Either way, you turn it over and change the bedroom in seconds, without buying anything.
Should I choose a plain or a printed quilt?
It depends on how busy the bedroom already is. If the headboard, wallpaper or curtains have a pattern, the two-colour plain reversible gives you variety without competing. If the room is neutral, a print is what gives it character — and you always have its matching plain side for the seasons when you want something quieter.
What are the quilts made of?
A 100% polyester petal-touch microfibre outer and a 100% polyester siliconised hollow-fibre filling with a feather-soft feel, at 300 g/m². It is machine washable. We do not use feathers or down.
Can I use the quilt without a cover?
Yes, that is the whole point. A quilt is designed to be on show: the printed side is what decorates the bed. If you would rather protect it, quilt covers exist, but they are not necessary: a flat sheet between you and the quilt is enough to wash it less often.
Are the quilts suitable for people with allergies?
We cannot guarantee that a fabric will not cause allergies, because it depends on each person. Our textiles are certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Class I: tested for harmful substances to the limits that apply to baby articles.
How do I look after a quilt?
What damages a quilt most is drying: high temperatures, a hot tumble dryer, not airing it and storing it in a plastic bag. Airing it for five minutes each morning is the most effective care and the least practised.
How should I store the quilt in summer?
Wash it, check the filling is completely dry inside and store it in a breathable fabric bag, somewhere dry and out of direct light. Never in a plastic bag or vacuum-packed for months: plastic traps moisture and long vacuum storage flattens the fibre.
Are Happyfriday quilts made in Spain?
Yes. Our design studio is in Cocentaina, Alicante, and they are made up in workshops in Spain. The prints are developed by our team of designers from the very first sketch: they are not stock designs or third-party licences.
