Certification OEKO-TEX
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Certification
The textiles you bring home are in contact with you every single day: when you tuck yourself in at night, when you set the table, when you dry your hands. That's why every textile we make carries OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, one of the most recognised textile safety labels in the world. Here we explain what it really means, what it guarantees, what it doesn't, and how you can check it yourself.
What OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 actually is
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an international testing and certification system for textile products. When an item carries the label, it means that the finished product and every single one of its components, the fabric, the threads, the prints, the zips and the labels themselves, have been tested against a list of more than 1,000 substances that may be harmful to human health.
This is not an in-house check carried out by the brand. The testing is done by an external, independent and accredited institute, and the certificate is renewed every year. In our case, the institute that tests and certifies our textiles is AITEX, the only OEKO-TEX institute in Spain, based in Alcoy.
What it guarantees (and what it doesn't)
What it does guarantee
- That the product and all its components have been tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances.
- That they stay within the limit values set by the standard, which are reviewed at least once a year.
- That it complies with international regulations of reference, such as the EU REACH regulation.
- That the verification has been carried out by an independent laboratory, not by the brand itself.
What it doesn't guarantee
This is worth saying clearly, because the label is often misrepresented. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is not an eco-label or a sustainability certification. It doesn't certify that a fabric is organic, it doesn't measure the environmental footprint of how it was made, and it doesn't assess the social conditions of production.
It is, very precisely, a human-health safety label: it confirms that what touches your skin doesn't contain harmful substances above the established limits. We'd rather tell you what it really is than dress it up.
The four classes, and why we sit in the most demanding one
Not all textiles come into contact with the skin in the same way, so OEKO-TEX groups certified products into four classes, from the most demanding to the least:
Our textiles are certified to Class I, the same one used for babies' articles. That's a higher bar than most of our range would actually require, and it's a deliberate decision: if something is going to live in your home, we want it to clear the highest bar.
Certifying our textiles with OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is how we put that promise in writing, so you don't have to take our word for it. This is not a label you can simply buy: it's a test you have to pass, product by product, and renew every year.
Our OEKO-TEX® certificates
We hold two OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificates, one for each type of product. You can check that both are currently active by clicking on either seal: it takes you to the official OEKO-TEX website, where the certificate number is validated in real time.

Textile safety is part of how we work, not all of it. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 doesn't certify any of what follows, which is exactly why we talk about it separately, but it's part of how we do things at happyfriday:
- We make our products in Spain, working with nearby suppliers.
- We use recycled material in the fillings of many of our duvets and duvet fillers.
- We use dyeing and printing techniques that cut down on water use.
These commitments are different from the certification, and we'd rather not mix them up: one thing at a time.
