what exactly a 4 seasons duvet is

Let's start by clearing up the most common misunderstanding. When people read "4 seasons" they usually imagine a single duvet with a medium fill weight that works for everything. And that's not it: it would be impossible, because the warmth you want in August and the warmth you want in January are nothing alike.

The DUO system is two complete, separate duvets. One of 120 grams, very light, and one of 250 grams, the in-between-season one. Each works on its own like a normal duvet, and they can also be fastened together to form a single 370-gram piece. Three levels of warmth with a single product.

It's not an in-between fill weight: it's two duvets used on their own or together.

Both share the same construction as the rest of our duvets: a microfibre outer and a siliconised hollow fibre filling. That means they keep you warm thanks to the air held in the fibres, not the weight, so even fastened together they don't give you that feeling of having something heavy on top. And like the rest of the family, they can be washed at home.

This is what the whole system is about. With two pieces you get three different configurations, and between them they cover the entire calendar.

The 120 g piece: the minimal layer

It's the more underrated of the two and the one that surprises people most. In summer many people sleep with just a flat sheet, but there are nights when you want something with a bit of body without it actually being warm. That's exactly what this piece is: it weighs very little, it breathes and it gives you that feeling of being covered that helps you sleep.

The 250 g piece: the one you'll use most

It's the in-between-season duvet and, if your bedroom is heated, the winter one too. It's the configuration you'll have on the bed for the most months of the year, so it's worth knowing that the DUO isn't "the winter one": above all it's the one for everything else, with the option of adding more when needed.

Both together: 370 g for winter

Fastened together they add up to 370 grams, which is proper winter warmth. It sits between our 250 and 450 duvets, so it covers winter well in most of Spain. If you live in the mountains or your home is particularly cold, the fixed 450 g is still the better option, and we're happy to say so.

how the two pieces fasten together

It's the practical question we get asked most, and the answer is reassuring: they join with fasteners around the edge, and the process takes a couple of minutes the first time and less than one once you've done it before.

You spread the two pieces one on top of the other, lining up the corners, and close the fasteners running along the edges. Once joined, they behave like a single duvet: you put them into the duvet cover just as you would a normal one, and inside they don't shift or bunch up separately.

When you want to separate them, it's the same process in reverse. And here's a practical tip: do it when you change the cover, which is when the duvet is already out. That way, changing the configuration doesn't cost you an extra step.

And washing

They're washed separately, which is an added advantage. Each piece is thinner and lighter than a full winter duvet, so they fit better in a home washing machine and dry faster. Gentle programme, moderate temperature and no fabric softener, which makes the fibre clump. When drying, shake them from time to time so they regain their volume.

who it really suits

The DUO isn't the best option for everyone, and saying so makes it easier to get it right. These are the four profiles it suits especially well.

And who it isn't worth it for

If you live on the Mediterranean coast with good heating, a fixed 250 g will probably cover you for almost the whole year and the DUO would leave you with an unused piece. At the other extreme, if your home is very cold or you're in a mountain area, the 370 g combined may fall short: there, the 450 g is the direct answer. DUO or two duvets: which works out better

The real alternative to the DUO is buying two fixed fill weight duvets: a 250 g for the in-between seasons and a 450 g for winter. Let's compare the two options honestly.

In short: the DUO wins on versatility, space and ease of washing, with a single purchase. The two fixed duvets win on maximum warmth, because no DUO combination reaches 450 g. So the decision is simple: if your winter is really harsh, go for the 450 g; if it's changeable or mild, the DUO gives you more flexibility.

One last point worth being clear about: the DUO is a duvet, so it needs its duvet cover, which is what carries the print. If you're looking for a printed piece that goes directly on top of the bed without a cover, then what you want is a comforter. And in either case, a throw at the foot of the bed gives you that extra adjustment for the odd night.
