One of the basic pieces of home decoration, especially in autumn and winter, is the rug.

Rugs protect the floor but also keep the house warm, promote warmth and make spaces much cosier.

Another function of rugs is often to create zones or atmospheres within a room.

If you also want to warm up your home now that the low temperatures are spreading, take a look at our colourful, original and trendy models.

In addition, all the rugs we sell in our shop are 100% natural, just like our bed linen.

Most popular carpet materials

When choosing a new carpet, it is necessary to choose not only the ideal size, but also the material. The question of what material a carpet is made of is crucial, as each carpet has its own properties, pros and cons. Let's take a look at the differences between the most commonly used materials today.

Carpets made of natural materials

The best thing about natural materials is that they are more authentic and sustainable. If you want a rug made of an organic material, these are the most popular:

Woollen rugs

One of the great advantages of woollen carpets is their durability as well as their insulating properties. Woollen rugs insulate a room thermally and acoustically and also regulate humidity.

Another advantage of this material is that it easily recovers its original appearance, despite many years of use or heavy tables, chairs, poufs, etc., placed on it.

Cotton rugs

This type of carpet is usually more affordable than the previous ones, easier to maintain (machine washable) and softer to the touch.

They dye well and do not cause static electricity. Cotton rugs are lighter in weight than wool rugs, but wear out faster.

Rugs of vegetable fibres

Undeniably colder to the touch, which is more noticeable in winter, it has not prevented them from becoming increasingly popular in homes.

These rugs are authentic and give the most natural feel to a home. The most common are made of jute, sisal, raffia or bamboo.

Some of these materials are not recommended for high traffic areas, such as jute, as it deteriorates easily.

All of them are bad friends of humidity and liquids (a little less the bamboo ones), so they are not suitable for bathrooms or outdoors where it usually rains a lot.

They have a great advantage in terms of cleaning, as they only require frequent vacuuming, on both sides, for them to be hygienic.

Synthetic rugs

If you don't mind that your carpets are not made of natural materials (usually also handmade and more sustainable), you can find many models on the market of carpets made of synthetic materials. The most common are polyester, vinyl, polypropylene or viscose.

Long pile shag is very cosy and warm in the home during the winter, as well as being hard-wearing and pleasant to the touch. Another advantage is that they are often cheaper.

How to keep your carpets looking as good as new?

Carpets are a type of home textile that can be really long-lived if they have a minimum quality and are properly cared for.

In the old days, carpets were collected when summer came, taken to the dry cleaners for a thorough cleaning and then stored until the end of the summer.

Although many families still do this today, others prefer to buy rugs made of lighter materials that are easy to wash at home. Whether they are fibre rugs that only need a good vacuuming or cotton rugs that can be washed in the washing machine.

In any case, it is essential to maintain your carpets in accordance with their material and characteristics, as well as the manufacturer's instructions.

In general, our tips for washing carpets in the washing machine would be as follows:

  • Look at the label to make sure the rug can be washed in the washing machine.
  • Make sure the rug fits in your washing machine. If it doesn't fit, take it to a local laundromat where the washing machines are bigger.
  • Always wash them cold, at 30º, no more.
  • Choose a delicate cycle for washing.
  • Avoid spin-drying and, if possible, let them air-dry.
  • Do not use detergent, but a mild, neutral soap.
