How to dress the bedrooms of a country house?
Captivated by this timeless style, we continue to opt for rustic decoration in country houses or even town houses. Why? Perhaps because of its authenticity, warmth and relaxing atmosphere.
So, how to dress the bedrooms of a country house? This is a key issue, as textiles are fundamental here when it comes to emphasising a traditional or modernised rustic decor.
First of all, let's review the keys to the current country house style. What does a decoration or interior have to be rustic or country to be categorised as rustic or country? Let's see...
What is the country house style?
Village or rustic style houses often share these characteristics:
- The houses are well integrated with their surroundings.
- They are cosy, authentic and warm homes.
- Traditional building materials and natural materials predominate in the furnishings: clay, adobe, stone, wood, ceramics...
- They have plenty of natural light thanks to their large windows.
- The floors are usually made of stone, handmade terracotta, hydraulic tiles or wood.
- Wooden furniture and antiques abound in the country houses.
- They usually have fireplaces or wood-burning cookers.
- They often have an outdoor space.
That said, when decorating or remodelling a rustic house, ideally all traditional construction, architectural and decorative elements should be preserved.
Preserves traditional elements
For example, if the house has a fireplace, leave it and fit it out so that it can be used. If it can't be or you don't want it, leave it as a mere decorative element, it will take you back to the old country houses!
Preserve or restore, if possible, wooden beams or stone walls. These elements automatically bring you closer to the country house style and promote a rustic decoration.
If the windows are not very large, enlarge them and close them with systems that prevent heat from escaping. Good insulation is essential to keep the house cosy and warm during the winter!
What type of furniture to choose for a country house?
As for furniture, keep or use traditional pieces of unfinished or unvarnished wood to decorate your rooms, where irregularities, imperfections or knots can be seen. This is crucial!
Typical furniture of a country house magazine are cupboards, chests of drawers, dressers, sideboards, four-poster beds...
Also, in the kitchen it is ideal to have taps, sinks and other elements in a retro or rustic style. If you can't keep these items, they are nowadays sold as classic vintage elements.
Leave the most beautiful pieces of your crockery on display, as well as copper or stainless steel pots and pans. In the past, they used to be hung around the hob area. Do you want to replicate this?
Bathrooms and wallpaper
In the bathroom it is recommended that you install a large stone or traditional ceramic washbasin, with an antique style tap and a large mirror.
If it can be on a rustic wooden bathroom cabinet, all the better; if not, create a stone countertop for the basin, you'll see how beautiful it looks!
Romantic or Victorian style wallpaper can be used in the bathroom and in some rooms to emphasise the rustic character of the cottage.
You don't need to wallpaper all the walls, one wall is enough!
Dressing up the bedrooms in a country house: the textiles
Fabrics and textiles are an essential part of simple rustic cottages or modern country houses. Textiles play a key role and should help to highlight building elements or wooden furniture.
Neutral, light and pastel colours are therefore often used. In recent years, however, earth tones and greens have also become popular for rustic home decoration.
In terms of materials, textiles must be 100% natural. The most commonly used are linen, cotton and wool. However, vegetable fibres such as jute or esparto grass can also be found in carpets or auxiliary pieces in these country houses.
Use organic fabrics in light or pastel shades to decorate beds and sofas. Curtains, cushion covers, blankets, plaids, bed linen, tablecloths, cloths... All these items should be mainly linen or cotton!
In terms of patterns, the traditional chequered motifs are a thing of the past. Stripes have replaced them, but the most commonly used in this type of house are plant motifs: blades of grass, leaves and flowers.
