how to dress your bed for the way you use it

Not every bed is used the same way, so not every bed is dressed the same way. A bed where you read every night, the one in the guest room or the one in a small bedroom each call for a different approach. Here are six ideas, one for each case.

When temperatures drop, the bed becomes the centre of the home again: we read in it more, sleep longer and it often welcomes visitors. That is why knowing how to dress your bed is not about following a single formula but about adapting it to each situation. In this guide we bring together six ideas for dressing your bed in autumn based on how you use it and the space you have, with specific suggestions you can copy as they are, and we finish with the most relaxed look of the season: the intentionally undone bed.

six beds, six ways to dress them

1 · The reading bed

If autumn is your season for evenings with a book, your bed needs a good backrest. First lay your sleeping pillows flat and, in front of them, stand two 60 × 60 cm square cushions upright against the headboard. That gives you a soft wall to lean back on without your back sinking. Cushion covers with a little texture or in warm tones do the rest: the backrest also becomes the most decorative part of the bed.

2 · The small-bedroom bed

In a small room the bed takes up almost the whole view, so it is best not to make it look fuller. Choose a single statement print, on the duvet cover or the comforter, and keep everything else plain. Light, warm tones such as ecru or sand make the space feel larger than pure white. And one detail that makes a real difference: the duvet or comforter should hang without dragging on the floor. A bed that finishes neatly at the sides lets the room breathe.

3 · The guest bed

For the guest bed, the key is that it is easy to prepare and suits anyone. A comforter is the most practical option: it is a single piece, needs no cover and goes on in a minute. Pair it with plain sheets in a neutral tone and leave an extra blanket folded on a chair or visible in the wardrobe in case the night turns colder. A set of towels on the bed completes the welcome.

4 · The bed for two (with two temperatures)

In a shared bed it is common for one person to feel cold and the other warm. Rather than looking for a middle ground, dress it with both people in mind: a moderately warm filling for both and an extra layer only on the side of whoever feels the cold more. If the disagreement lasts all year, the 4 Seasons system lets you adjust the warmth without changing the filling.

5 · The teenage bed

In a teenager’s room, the bed does during the day what the sofa does in the living room. If it is against the wall, line several rectangular cushions along it as a backrest: by day it is a spot to sit and at night they come off in seconds. The print can have more personality here, and a zip-up duvet set solves the classic unmade-bed problem: one zip and the bed is made.

6 · The bed without a headboard

Without a headboard the bed looks unfinished and the pillows slide towards the wall. The simplest fix is to create one with cushions: two or three large square cushions leaning against the wall, in the same colour or in two tones that go together. If you want something bolder, a bedspread or printed fabric hung from a rail above the bed acts as a textile headboard and transforms the whole bedroom without any building work.

the intentionally undone bed

Not every morning do you feel like making the bed hotel-style, and in autumn there is a look that works really well: the undone bed that looks chosen. The difference between “undone” and “neglected” comes down to three gestures.

1

Shake before you let it fall

Take the duvet or comforter by the two top corners, shake it in the air and let it fall onto the bed. The creases that remain are soft, not bunched up.

2

Fold back just one corner

Turn back one corner at the head of the bed, diagonally. It shows the sheet and gives a lived-in feel without looking abandoned.

3

Pillows stacked, not lined up

Instead of placing them perfectly, stack the pillows slightly offset. With a print in the background, the whole thing looks cared for even if it is not precise to the millimetre.

This look works especially well with prints and cotton fabrics, which hide creases better than very pale plains. And it has a practical advantage: leaving the bed slightly open in the morning helps it air before you close it up completely.

An intentionally undone bed says “life happens here”, not “nobody made the bed”.

prints to dress every bed

We design our bedding in our studio in Cocentaina, and it is printed and made up in workshops in Spain. We print the design directly onto the fabric, without screens, which lets us reproduce prints with many colours, gradients and fine details. So you can choose the print that suits each bed in the house.

frequently asked questions

frequently asked questions

How do I make a comfortable backrest for reading in bed?
Lay your sleeping pillows flat and, in front of them, stand two 60 × 60 cm square cushions upright against the headboard. They create a firm, soft surface to lean back on without your back sinking.
How do I dress the bed in a small bedroom?
With a single statement print and everything else plain, light and warm tones, and a duvet or comforter that does not drag on the floor. That way the bed does not overwhelm the space.
What should I put on the guest bed in autumn?
A comforter, because it is a single piece and goes on in a minute, plain sheets in a neutral tone and an extra blanket on show in case the night is colder.
How do I dress a bed without a headboard?
Lean two or three large square cushions against the wall as a headboard, or hang a bedspread or printed fabric from a rail above the bed.
Does an unmade bed look good?
Yes, if it is intentional: shake the duvet before letting it fall, fold back just one corner at the head and stack the pillows slightly offset. It works best with prints and cotton.
