The moment of decorating a baby's room is always full of enthusiasm, excitement and a lot of illusion. Among the essential pieces of furniture for their new room, the cot is one of the most important, especially in the early years.

Before giving you some advice on how to choose the best bedding for their cot, let's take a look at the different types of cot available.

The most common types of cradle

The most commonly purchased cots for furnishing baby rooms are:

  • Co-sleeping cots: They allow contact with the baby during the night and can be attached to the parents' bed. They are multifunctional, as they can be used as a normal cot during the day, with bars, and then lower part of the cot to join it to the parents' bed.
  • Convertible cots: These are those that can be transformed into beds for when the children are older and last until the child is up to 12 years old. Many include drawers and changing tables.
  • Standard cots: These are the traditional cots with bars and usually have different adjustable heights depending on the age of the baby.

Each type of cot has different characteristics and advantages and the most suitable choice will depend on the needs of each family and each child. You should also choose one according to the space available in your home.

The most important thing is to prioritise safety, comfort, quality of materials and practicality.

How to dress a baby's cot?

Choosing the right bedding for a baby's cot is important for both comfort and safety. Here are some tips:

1. Material: Look for natural fabrics such as cotton or linen, which are soft, cool, breathable and kind to the skin. Avoid synthetic materials, as they can cause allergies or may even be less breathable.

2. Fitting and measurements: Sheets, especially fitted sheets, should fit snugly to the cot mattress to prevent them from becoming loose and bunching up. Take your measurements and choose accordingly.

3. Less is more: When it comes to decorating, minimalism is always good, but when it comes to dressing the baby's cot, it is also appropriate for safety reasons. To avoid putting your child at unnecessary risk, it is best to keep bedding simple, without frills, pompoms, sequins, buttons or bows, especially during the first few months.

4. Resistance to washing: Choose bed linen that is good, will withstand multiple washings and will not fade.

5. Certified fabrics: Look for products that comply with safety regulations and do not contain harmful substances. There are seals such as OEKO TEX STANDARD 100 that guarantee that the fabrics do not contain substances that are harmful to health.

6. Temperature: It is very important that the temperature of the baby's room is appropriate, as well as the bedding according to the time of year. Your baby should not be too hot or too cold. Choose sheets and quilts that keep them comfortable.

Think that less is more when dressing your baby's cot, so it is not advisable to use pillows, duvets or soft toys in the cot during the first months of life.

The best bedding for baby's cot

The cot should have a suitable mattress, fitted sheets, fitted sheet and topper, a quilt or light blanket (such as muslin), a cot protector, especially in the headboard area, and something that gives the baby security due to its usual smell, such as a dummy or cuddly toy.

  • Whenever possible, wash clothes inside out.
  • Use a short spin programme.
  • Do not use bleach, it is preferable to remove stains with a little soapy water before washing the clothes in the washing machine.
