The most common materials for bath towels

To buy luxury or high quality bath towels you should look at the label and see what they are made of. The best materials are certified quality cottons, but often there are pieces that, in order to lower the price, mix natural and man-made fibres such as cotton and polyester.

The most common materials from which most towels are made, in descending order of quality, would be:

1. Egyptian cotton: Soft, absorbent and luxurious thanks to its long fibres.

2. Turkish cotton:
Similar to the previous one but with a thicker texture and somewhat softer. It also dries quickly.

3. Linen:
When 100% natural, it is very elegant, breathable and fresh.

4. Man-made fibres:
Modal or polyester, usually blended with cotton in some percentage indicated on the label. In some cases it absorbs moisture much faster than a 100% cotton towel. These towels have shorter fibres and are considerably cheaper.

5. Bamboo:
Less common sustainable material but also soft, absorbent and kind to the skin. It is hypoallergenic and antibacterial, ideal for babies.

6. Microfibre: Very thin and light, quick-drying textile, more suitable for travel or gym wear.

Types of terry towels for the best bath towels

You will normally find these three types of terry on bathroom towels.

Traditional or conventional terry

Simple, double yarn terry towelling with short fibres. They lead to cheaper towels and lower grammages.

American terry

Of higher quality and grammage, it is twisted and has a longer fibre.

Untwisted or zero twist curl

Soft to the touch, very good quality and even longer and more absorbent fibres.

What sizes are the towels in the bathroom?

The standard bath towel is the one measuring 70 x 14cm. What sizes are bathroom towels? This is the most common size and gives good coverage. However, many people like extra-large bath towels, such as those measuring 100 cm x 150 cm or 160 cm.

Then there are the hand towels, which we usually place next to the sink and are usually 50 x 100 cm. We use these to dry our face and hands and often also our hair.

The smallest would be the so-called toilet towels 30 x 50 cm. They can also be used in the bidet.

Finally, there are towels or floor mats, placed next to the shower or bathtub to support the feet when getting out. These usually measure 50x70-80 cm.

How much does a set of towels cost?

It will depend on the quality of the material, its weight, the brand and whether it includes 3 or 4 pieces.

However, to give you an idea, we can tell you that a complete set of 4 towels (one bath towel, one shower towel, one toilet towel and one hand towel) will cost between 40 and 80 euros on average.

The most absorbent towels are those of high quality, long fibres and high grammage.
Usually Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels with a high grammage will be more expensive. Opt for weights of at least 450 and 500 grams/m2.

Important: the care of bath towels

The best bathroom towels are not only those made of high quality cotton, but also those that are properly cared for, because with optimal maintenance they will always be soft, fluffy and will last longer.

The keys to proper maintenance of bathroom towels are to always look at the labels on the textiles before washing them, but in general, avoid fabric softeners, use a neutral detergent and use low temperature and longer programmes.

Do not load the washing machine too much so that it spins correctly but not at very high revolutions so as not to damage the fibres of your towels.

Try to wash towels separately from other garments and group them by colour, i.e. do not wash the coloured ones with the light ones so that there is no colour transfer.

The best way to dry towels is in the open air
, but not in direct sunlight. Finally, tumble dryers help to achieve the fluffy feel we like so much in bath towels.

Remember that high quality towels can last longer without losing their softness and absorbency if properly maintained.
